Original or Cacao: choosing your golden milk

Original or Cacao: choosing your golden milk

Both of our blends start from the same base: turmeric, Ceylon cinnamon, cardamom, maca, ginger and black pepper. Neither has added sweetener. One ingredient separates them, and it changes both the flavour and the time of day each one suits. That ingredient is cacao.

Original: earthy, fragrant and caffeine free

Original tastes like what it is: earthy turmeric, warming cinnamon and the fragrance of cardamom, with a little bite from the ginger and a peppery finish. It's spiced rather than sweet, so the milk you choose and any sweetener you add decide how it ends up.

Original has no caffeine, so it suits an afternoon break or a cup after dinner. If you're looking for something warm to replace an evening coffee or a late hot chocolate, start here.

Cacao: chocolatey, with a little natural caffeine

Cacao Golden Milk adds cacao to the same blend. On the label it sits third, after the turmeric and cinnamon. The result is richer and closer to a hot chocolate, with the spice still underneath and no sugar added.

Cacao contains naturally occurring caffeine, so Cacao Golden Milk is not caffeine free. It suits the morning or early afternoon, and it's a good fit if you're cutting back on coffee rather than cutting it out.

How to make either one

Start with half a tablespoon of the blend, about 4 g, and a mug of your favourite milk.

  1. Mix the blend with a splash of warm milk until smooth, so the turmeric doesn't sit on top.
  2. Whisk in the rest of the milk, warmed but not boiled. Boiling flattens the spice. Less milk makes a stronger cup.
  3. Sweeten to taste, if you like.

For an iced cup, mix the blend with a splash of warm milk first, then top up with cold milk and pour over ice. For a smoothie, blend a serve with milk and a banana. A frozen banana makes it thicker, and Cacao makes it taste like a chocolate shake.

Ground spices settle, so give your cup another stir as you drink.

Which milk?

Any milk works. Oat milk makes a creamy cup with a natural sweetness. Almond is lighter and lets the spice come through. Coconut is the richest. Dairy milk froths best if you have a frother. With any plant milk, the whole cup stays vegan.

Still deciding?
